The first match of the day between Slovenia and Algeria was considered to some as a bit of a sleeper. Slovenia scored the game winning goal late in the game against the 10 man Algeria squad on another keeper mistake. Chaouchi went to front smother a ball that he should have dove for. Samir Handanovic and Faouzi Chaouchi each recorded 2 saves and Handanovic was awarded the first shutout in Group C – which was well deserved with fantastic free kick save.
Ghana’s keeper, Richard Kingson made one brilliant save to preserve the shutout and 3 points for his country, other than that he was untested. Serbia’s goalkeeper, Vladimir Stojkovic, didn’t record one save, and conceded a goal from a penalty kick. Here’s a great stat – Serbia has given up the most penalty kicks, 7, without keeping one out.
Australian goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer, saw a lot of action from Germany. Germany had 17 shots, 9 on goal, scoring 4 of them. Schwarzer did the best he could making 5 saves. Germany’s Manuel Neuer didn’t see as nearly much action as Schwarzer did, but kept his defense focused throughout the one-sided match and was awarded his first World Cup shutout.
