Another Goalkeeper blunder, a couple of upsets, and 5 goals were scored during the 3 World Cup matches today. Today’s first match between Denmark and the Netherlands was one with 2 unfortunate goals for the Danish side. Goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen gave up an own goal headed in by his teammate Van Persie and then made a terrific play challenging Eljero Elia on a one on one breakaway which hit the post and landed at Dirk Kuyt’s foot. Sorenson was very impressive making 5 saves a couple which were jaw dropping. Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg only faced 3 shots on goal making every save to earn the shutout.
Japan upset Cameroon today with a well deserved 1-0 win. Japan’s goalkeeper, Eiji Kawashima, best save didn’t count because Cameroon committed a foul in the box just before the shot. Souleymanou Hamidou couldn’t do much on the goal. Keisuke Honda was unmarked in the 6 yard box and finished the bending cross sent from Daisuke Matsui. This win marked Japan’s first World Cup win outside of Japan. (Japan hosted the 2002 World Cup)
The upset of the day was during the Paraguay and Italy match. Paraguay was just one costly goalkeeper mistake from leading their group with 3 points. Paraguay’s goalkeeper Justo Villar, made a terrible decision to attack a cross from a corner kick and “went out to sea.” Villar wasn’t even close to the ball and did not have to challenge the cross. Italy took advantage of the empty net and finished the cross to tie the game 1-1. Also worth mentioning, star goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon did not return to the second half of the game. Federico Marchetti took his place and luckily did not see much action during the second half of play. Buffon injured his hamstring, but it is uncertain as to how as the only action he saw was the Paraguay goal, which he did not move for.

Reusch gloves were actually seen on the first day of the tournament worn by Fernando Muslera of Uruguay. They will be seen again today worn by Julio Cesar of Brazil. Does anyone know what Marchetti wore last night. Dutch brand Valk may be favourite but they don’t seem to be in the range of any of the more recognised brands!
