Road to the 2011 MLS Cup: Goalkeeper Recap

We always see great goalkeeper action during the MLS Cup playoffs. Here are some of the notable performances for the set of games between the Seattle Sounders and Real Salt Lake, New York Red Bulls and LA Galaxy, Philadelphia Union and Houston Dynamo, and Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas City.

Kasey Keller – Seattle Sounders
Accomplished goalkeeper and soon to be retired US soccer star, Kasey Keller had a stellar performance against Real Salt Lake. He was the best man on the field for the Sounders, but his efforts weren’t enough – the Sounders lost 3-0. Check out some of his highlights to see great back to back saves.

Josh Saunders – LA Galaxy
His 3 jaw dropping saves in the second half and play throughout the game made the one goal lead enough to win in NY. LA will have an interesting decision in the off-season to keep it’s two big time goalkeepers or trade one of them since they’re both good enough to be MLS starting keepers.

Tally Hall – Houston Dynamo
Did you see that upper 90 save on Torres’s free kick?! Tally Hall also had a couple of other game changing saves and helped his team win 2-1 against the Philadelphia Union.

Be Like Matt Pickens with the adidas Fingersaves, Predator Soft Ground Cleats, and Shutouts

Goalkeeper Matt Pickens and the Colorado Rapids are one step closer to back to back MLS Cup championships after their 1-0 win against the Columbus Crew last night. Pickens was not too busy last night, but kept his back line organized and made a couple of saves to earn the clean sheet.

This might be a superstition or maybe Pickens really does prefer the adidas FS Wet Weather goalkeeper gloves from last year over the 2011 line of adidas gloves. He’s been wearing these gloves for the past two seasons.

Happy Retirement Kasey Keller (but not just yet)!

This past weekend was Kasey Keller’s last regular season home soccer game. Many soccer fans are hoping he’ll pull a Brett Favre and come out of retirement for just one more season, especially those in Seattle as Keller is one of the best American goalkeepers and a Washington state native. This season Keller has been impressive with, 1 Player of the Week, 5 Save of the Week honors, 9 shutouts, 109 saves, and 17 wins.

Drew Carey, the Seattle Sounders owner made sure Keller didn’t leave without a big thank you. At the end of the final season game, there was a small ceremony and Carey gave Kasey Keller a custom helmet, ATV, and a plaque with his PUMA gloves. Keller arguably gave an even better thank you to the fans and his team with another a great game against the San Jose Earthquakes that later resulted in POW and SOW honors.

Best of luck Kasey! If we don’t see you on the field, we hope to at least see you coaching on the sidelines or in the broadcasting booth!

Kansas City Shot Stopper, Jimmy Nielsen Had Something To Prove

The complete MLS All-Star Roster was announced a couple of days ago and Jimmy Nielsen wasn’t on it. The votes from the fans, players, coaches, and the media passed on Nielsen and selected LA Galaxy’s Donovan Ricketts as the starter and MLS veteran Nick Rimando from Real Salt Lake as his back-up to face Manchester United. Ricketts and Rimando are the top two goalkeepers leading in the major goalkeeping stats including GAA, wins, and save percentage.

Maybe it was being left off of the 23 man All-Star team that led Nielsen to being nominated twice for this week’s NAPA Save of the Week. Unfortunately, Nielsen having his name twice on the ballot, may split his votes, but it’s still quite an honor. Watch the other nominees for the Save of the Week and vote, here!

If you’re wondering about Nielsen’s gloves – he wears Bearoz, the same brand that was spotted on North Korean goalkeeper, Myong-Guk Ri during the World Cup. Bearoz is worn by other goalkeepers in the MLS including Bill Hamid (DC United), and Jon Conway (Toronto FC).
