Goalkeeper Earns WPS Weekly Honors

Hey Keepers,

Join me in congratulating fellow goalkeeper Alli Lipsher for earning the WPS Player of the Week honor. It’s not often that a goalkeeper is recognized as the top player of the week in any league, so we were very excited to see Lipsher take home this honor. Lipsher was the anchor of the Beat’s defense saving 11 shots in her shutout performance against Sky Blue F.C.

GK1 Goalkeeper Gloves Spotted: WPS Star Jenni Branam

If you watched the WPS opening weekend you would have seen Sky Blue FC’s Jenni Branam sporting a pair of GK1 goalkeeper gloves. We’re always on the lookout for new goalkeeping products and brands and love seeing GK1 goalkeeper gear being worn by professionals. In the below picture, Jenni Branam is wearing the GK1 Cavalier which are only $54! Good luck finding a cheaper goalkeeper glove worn by a pro goalkeeper.

Cool Goalkeeper Shot… Karina LeBlanc has a Promise.

It’s always interesting to find out what motivates goalkeepers. This photo from the WPS website allows you make out what star goalkeeper, Karina LeBlanc writes on her PUMA gloves. ”I’VE GOT A PROMISE” This led us to wondering what LeBlanc’s promise is, maybe it was a team goal? Now we’re on the lookout for any other goalkeepers that write something motivational on their goalie gloves. If you find any, please send us a pic!

Goalkeepers as Leaders – Ashlyn Harris

This story may have gone unnoticed within Women’s Professional Soccer, most definitely within the soccer world as the World Cup came to a close. Goalkeepers are known as the generals on the field, they are mentally tough, organize their teams positioning, and are called upon to make game changing plays. Sometimes we see goalkeepers wear the captain’s arm band because of their leadership as we’ve seen on Iker Casillas, Claudio Bravo, Noel Valladares, and Justo Villar.

On July 11th, the Washington Freedom were away playing against the FC Gold Pride and were short two assistant coaches due to personal reasons. When head coach, Jim Gabarra was ejected from the game for arguing with the referee, former UNC goalkeeper, Ashlyn Harris stepped up and took initiative. She was going manage the team for the rest of the game, which may not have ever been expected of the rookie back up goalkeeper. Her reasoning behind her courageous actions, “We were just kind of sitting on the bench and he just kind of looked down the bench and I stood up and said I would take the substitution cards. He really didn’t point to anyone to be in charge. I thought it would be a good idea to take that responsibility because the other girls would probably end up playing.”

The Freedom fell just short with a 3-2 loss and are tied for 4th place in the WPS.

Women’s Professional Soccer’s Unique All-Star Game

In it’s inaugural year, the WPS All-Stars took on a professional team from Sweden. This year, the WPS fields two All-Star teams. To make it more exciting and compete against the World Cup, they had the highest voted players, Abby Wambach and Marta select their teams. With only 30 seconds to choose a player, the all-star draft seemed like a middle school kickball match. Here are the teams:

The youngest professional soccer player, let alone goalkeeper, is not even a year old! She plays for the new Women’s Professional Soccer franchise, the Philadelphia Independence. Don’t let her picture fool you, Robyn was born on 3/17/10.

Hats Off to Great Soccer Advertising!

Let’s start with the WPS (Women’s Professional Soccer), after all, ladies first. Their unique projector advertisements are very creative and will definitely raise the awareness of the WPS. This strong marketing move definitely came as a surprise as the WPS lost their most lucrative and successful club, the LA Sol just after one season. But, back to the great advertisement!

It’s pretty neat how you can see your text message scroll across a huge building like that. Great idea. However, it seems that this advertisement will only be shown for the three nights before the home openers and only in DC, New Jersey, and Chicago. While it’s a great idea to build the awareness the WPS so desperately needs, it looks like the league wasn’t willing to go the extra mile.
